A temporary structure is a modular, prefabricated and relocatable buildings designed for short, medium or long-term use. They are constructed with durable aluminium or steel frames using different walling materials, depending on how long they are required for. As an example, short-term temporary structures often use PVC sides like a marquee, these are suitable for weekend events, festivals and short-term overflow storage. Other options include medium and long-term structures for commercial use such as, car showrooms, pop-up stores, hospitality structures, classrooms and temporary sports buildings. In some cases, modular buildings are often used for more permanent applications, such as schools, offices, or site welfare facilities on construction projects. Temporary structures, by contrast, are flexible, and offer more customisation opportunities with a wide range of specification options.

What happens if you only need the space for a few days, weeks or months? If you are looking for a short term-solution, an industrial storage tent or a marquee be a good option to consider. These structures can be deployed rapidly to increase your capacity and rented for however long you need it.
A temporary structure is a solution that is designed to be installed quickly to provide additional space over a period of time. A temporary structure can be used for both short-term requirements for a few days or weeks, through to long-term requirements over several years. A temporary structure can also be classed as a semi-permanent structure. temporary structures come in a range of sizes and can be a standardised bay size, usually in 5m increments or supplied in a bespoke size, depending on the space available.
For example, it could be a short term canteen or welfare structure on a construction site or a temporary warehouse building to hold seasonal stock. Alternatively, for longer-term applications a temporary structure can be used as a workshop building over many years to increase operational capacity. A temporary structure is portable, meaning should your needs change the building can be re-located, sold on the second hand temporary building market or returned if you rented the structure.
Temporary structures are fast, flexible and durable. They can be designed and installed at short notice to meet urgent needs. The first difference is in the design and engineering process. Generally speaking, you do not meet to engage an architect or structural engineer to design and install a temporary structure. We will visit site and discuss your options, from this we can prepare free design drawings in-house at speed. Specifying a temporary structure is similar to a permanent structure in that we can offer a full range of options from doors right through to custom internal racking if required.
Once the design and specification has been completed, the installation process is vastly different. The building is installed in bays, using pre-fabricated modular components. This means it can be installed in a matter of days with minimal disruption. A permanent structure requires significant design development, often involving a range of consultants. It can be many months before the project even makes it to site. A permanent structure is constructed, starting with site preparation works, foundations, utilities (where required), super structure, before walls are built up, taking months before the structure is watertight. The internal fit-out can also take several weeks. Traditional construction causes disruption and is a high-risk activity, often subject to delays, challenges and material shortages. Finally, one of the most significant differences is cost. These solutions are in the region of 70% cheaper than a traditional building, providing a long-term alternative to a traditional building.
TEMPORARY STRUCTURES IN ACTION
In most cases, if the structure is being used for more than 28 days you will need to get planning permission. There are some exemptions and our temporary building experts can offer a consultation to assist you in obtaining planning permission.
