The Requirement

Our client, a League One football club required a dedicated, semi-permanent strength and conditioning facility to complement their existing training ground infrastructure. F&L Temporary Buildings were approached by the Head of Physical Performance to help with all aspects of the development.

Their vision was to install a large, high-specification, fully insulated gym and conditioning facility at the club’s training centre and academy. They also wanted the building to act as a hub, bringing together players, coaching staff, and academy talent together in a professional environment, large enough to accommodate the full squad.

The new building was intended to replace an old, smaller 60m2 gym and an uninsulated temporary structure, providing enough space for the team to train together in the new purpose-built facility. The team were previously split across two buildings and unable to work together as a group.

The Solutions

Working directly with the Head of Physical Performance and club Directors, we completed a site consultation and feasibility exercise. A suitable location was identified adjacent to the training pitches. The location was recommended as it provided convenient and quick access from the main building to the new gym and onwards to the training pitches. This was important as players can transition to the pitches quickly after completing pre-training activation and return to the gym for conditioning post-training.

From the initial approach in late spring, we worked closely with the club to evolve the design through a series of iterations. This included specifying a bespoke RAL colour to bend into the training centre, increasing the initial footprint and incorporating extensive glazing within two elevations to overlook the training pitches. Each stage of design development refined the details, ensuring the building not only met technical requirements but also created the right environment for players and staff. The 300m2 building was handed over to the client after a five-day installation to complete the fit out, including specialist flooring and lighting in time for the new season starting.
