Can AI design a temporary warehouse?

We put it to the test….

Like most, we have been embracing the power of artificial Intelligence (AI) to make our lives easier. So, we asked the question “Can AI design a temporary warehouse?”

Dall.e is a system developed by OpenAI that can create original, realistic images and art from a short text description. So, we put Dall.e to work and tested AI’s ability design a temporary warehouse building! Let’s explore the results…

What did we ask for first?

We used the prompt “design a temporary warehouse for storage” we started by keeping the specification simple. It delivered a relatively good looking warehouse building, possibly a little over-engineered internally but overall, we were impressed.

One of the key differences between the AI design and one of our temporary warehouses was in the roof space. Our temporary warehouses offer more space internally due to their clearspan apex roof.

Let’s test it further…

Now we wanted to design a high specification, insulated warehouse building so this time we asked Dall.e to design a “highly insulated and durable temporary warehouse building. Clad in insulated sandwich panels. Please include two roller shutter doors.

ai designed temporary warehouse

This was an interesting result, we were a little skeptical about including sandwich panels in the prompt for this warehouse but the results were reasonable. We like the addition of the small canopy shelter above the warehouse door. This is a design feature we have delivered for a national rail infrastructure contractor.  However, not having level access could be a challenge and the roller shutter doors were completely missing from the structure.  The concrete slab installation leaves a lot to be desired too!

How should a high spec insulated warehouse look? We have installed five warehouses for Ikea so we can safely say what a good warehouse looks like. You can see a recent insulated warehouse project here.

Industrial canopy structure

What about a loading bay canopy? This attempt was commendable but still very raw and not as polished as it should be! This attempt did really grasp the shape of the structure providing a large covered loading area.

The unsightly overhanging material certainly isn’t ideal.  Maybe AI isn’t fully aware of the quality, durability and life expectancy of a “temporary structure.” Our temporary building solution is engineered to perform for over 20 years and backed by a comprehensive warranty.

We revisited the design brief and asked for a “steel sided canopy structure” and the result looks more suitable although the support beams will certainly get in the way of unloading and loading operations.  Our canopies provide an un-interrupted open elevation for easy access.

If you are looking for a robust, well designed canopy, take a look at the set of canopies we delivered for Oakfurnitureland in this case study.

Fast and accurate temporary warehouse design

This was just a quick exercise (and a bit of fun in the office!) to see how AI approaches designing a temporary warehouse. It’s clear that AI “gets it” in principle but the engineering details are not there yet. So, if you need to design a warehouse, what’s better than AI when it comes to design? Natural intelligence, expertise and industry know how combined with world class manufacturing facilities. That’s where we can help.

Our team of temporary building experts can make designing your structure fast and simple. We also won’t miss out any key components such as doors! Our design service is included with structural calculations and design drawings to get your warehouse building up and running.

Have you considered a temporary building for your construction project?

Temporary buildings can play a vital role in construction and infrastructure projects

Our range of versatile temporary structures and canopies provide a number of benefits that compliment modular site cabins. In this article, we will explore the best temporary buildings available for construction projects and how you can use a temporary building on your construction project.

Our temporary building experts explore their unique features, benefits, and real-world examples of successful implementation of temporary buildings on construction and infrastructure projects.

Temporary building for construction project

Additional space. Made to measure

Firstly, consider the importance of having space on construction sites. Temporary buildings offer valuable extra space for a vast range of activities. Traditional modular buildings are often used for staff welfare, site offices and meeting rooms. However, a temporary building can provide significant extra space that can be customised. This is ideal in particular for longer term construction and infrastructure projects.

Secondly, temporary buildings are incredibly flexible meaning they can be used in conjunction with a traditional modular site cabin. A traditional stand-alone site accommodation unit, for example a Portakabin welfare building or toilet block is hired in for a set, specific purpose. They can be stacked and provide a great solution for construction projects. Where as a temporary building offers additional scope for customisation and size options.

What is the number one use for temporary buildings on a construction site?

Industrial storage facility or on-site warehousing: With large construction projects often requiring a significant amount of equipment and materials, at this point having sufficient storage space is crucial for efficient operations.

Markedly, a temporary structure can be specified with large doors, suitable for plant access and fitted with racking solutions for safe storage of construction materials. Our best selling solution for construction projects is industrial warehousing.

In addition, if you are looking for something more flexible and larger than a traditional site cabin, a temporary building will also suit your needs.  overall, a temporary building can offer a large, open plan office or be partitioned into smaller offices, meeting rooms and suites.

Why are temporary buildings growing in popularity on construction projects?

Portability

A temporary building can be quickly dismantled and reused for future projects, further maximising their value as an investment. This makes them a good option for multi-year construction projects such as rail and road infrastructure development.

Our temporary buildings are designed with portability in mind and they are completely relocatable.  This provides an added advantage for construction companies. Additionally, these structures can be rapidly and easily moved within the construction site or to a new site as project needs change.

So, whether it’s adapting to evolving project layouts or shifting focus to different areas, during the build programme, temporary buildings offer the flexibility to accommodate these adjustments. Furthermore, they don’t require substantial alterations or time-consuming construction work.

Rapid deployment

The construction industry often faces tight deadlines, and any delays can have a significant impact on project completion. The installation process for a temporary building is rapid, thanks to modular construction techniques.

A temporary building can be installed in a matter of days. It requires minimal plant and due to their flexibility they can be installed on most ground surfaces. They can even joined to or near existing buildings or modular site cabins.

Construction project including temporary building

What are the best temporary buildings for construction projects?

When selecting a temporary building for a construction project, several crucial factors should be taken into consideration to find the best building. Firstly, the structure and durability of the temporary building is vital. Construction sites can be challenging environments, with exposure to various weather conditions and heavy-duty operations. It is essential to choose a temporary building designed to withstand these conditions and provide reliable and durable shelter.

We can offer a wide range of specification options to suit the intended application. Significantly, our buildings include industrial storage tents, with robust PVC side, durable steel storage buildings (with an optional loading canopy) or fully insulated options.  Additionally, we also offer a range of options which includes aspects such as lighting, heating, cooling, security systems and internal partitioning.

Portable building solutions: Explore completed projects

We have provided a range of temporary modular structures, prefabricated buildings and portable structures to the construction industry, most recently to support the HS2 project. Our first tier contractor partner required a temporary solution for additional storage. We have delivered ten modular building solutions in connection with HS2. Explore the project case study here.

Are temporary buildings classed as semi-permanent structures?

Debunk the myths surrounding semi-permanent solutions

If you’re considering installing a temporary structure on your site you may be wondering if temporary buildings are classed as semi-permanent structures. Temporary buildings were once perceived as a quick-fix temporary solution for short-term needs. While that is still the case, big improvements in manufacturing and production technology have definitely blurred the lines between what is a “temporary” and “semi-permanent” structure.

Temporary buildings have undergone a transformation, from almost disposal products to durable, long-lasting and essentially, semi-permanent structures. As a result, this shift towards quality and durability has challenged conventional perceptions.

This article delves into the key question: Are temporary buildings classed as semi-permanent structures? We unravel the intricacies, debunk myths, and explore the robust features that make temporary buildings a wise investment in the long run and why we consider temporary buildings to be semi-permanent solutions.

Understanding the terminology:

The terminology of semi-permanent structures and temporary buildings is often used interchangeably, leading to confusion. While they share similarities, they are distinct in their intended use and benefits.

Before looking into the durability of temporary buildings, it’s crucial to clarify the terminology. Temporary buildings are portable, de-mountable and movable structures. This gives you a large amount of flexibility and the ability to relocate or rent a temporary building.

A semi-permanent building generally has a steel or solid roof and is much more complicated to move or relocate. Compared to a temporary building, which features a robust PVC roof and is easily re-located. A semi-permanent building will commonly use a steel frame, whereas a temporary building will use a strong but lightweight aluminium frame system.

Depending on the size and construction methodology, a semi-permanent building may also need more complex foundations and feature traditional construction elements like brick and block. Whereas temporary buildings can simply be installed on a concrete pad or other ground surfaces without too much work.

When looking at temporary buildings, they are designed to be erected quickly and easily due to their modular construction, providing a swift solution for immediate space requirements. On the other hand, semi-permanent structures take longer to install.

The differences between the two structures can be blurry, with many temporary buildings exhibiting durability and longevity that challenge the perception of ‘temporary.’

The evolution of temporary buildings:

Gone are the days when temporary buildings were synonymous with flimsy structures lacking durability. Advancements in construction materials, engineering, and design have led to the creation of temporary buildings that rival their semi-permanent counterparts in terms of strength and longevity. This plays a crucial role in answering the question “Are temporary buildings classed as semi-permanent?”

Our modern temporary buildings use high-quality materials such as robust yet lightweight frames, durable fabrics, and advanced modular components. These materials contribute to the overall structural integrity, enabling temporary buildings to withstand various weather conditions and environmental challenges.

What about planning permission and building regulations?

Depending on how long you intend to use the temporary building structure, in most cases, you will need to submit a local authority planning application. Due to our experience, we can support you with your planning application. Our structures meet building regulation standards and can also be integrated into any original building on your site.

Find your local planning authority on the government website.

Durable Features of Temporary Buildings:

Structural strength and durability:

Temporary buildings are no longer makeshift structures with questionable stability. Today’s designs incorporate robust frames that provide the necessary strength to endure heavy loads and adverse weather conditions.

Inside a temporary warehouse solution under construction

Weather resistance:

The materials used in temporary buildings are chosen for their ability to resist the elements. From heavy rain to strong winds and even snow loads, temporary buildings are designed and engineered to weather diverse environmental conditions.

Bespoke options and flexibility:

One of the unique features of temporary buildings is their adaptability. They can be easily customised to suit specific requirements and can be reconfigured or expanded as needs evolve. This flexibility enhances their long-term viability. Again, this is a slight difference compared to a semi-permanent structure which is harder to extend if you need additional space.

Quality cladding options:

The cladding options used in modern temporary buildings are again, engineered for durability. UV-resistant, fire-retardant, and thermally efficient materials contribute to the extended lifespan of these structures. Like a semi-permanent structure, high levels of thermal efficiency can be achieved by selecting insulated sandwich panels. Or, if the application is more industrial, for example, a workshop, steel cladding can be specified.

Are temporary buildings semi-permanent?

While the term “temporary” implies a finite lifespan, the durability and longevity of modern temporary buildings challenge this perception. With their advanced engineering and high-quality materials, a temporary building can be in place for over 20 years.

In conclusion, the classification of temporary buildings as semi-permanent structures is not just a matter of terminology; it is a reflection of the evolving nature and enhanced durability of temporary buildings.

Choosing a temporary building is an investment in a structure that stands the test of time, offering longevity and adaptability that goes beyond the temporary label. If you need additional space and capacity, I would be more than happy to arrange a local site visit to see the quality and durability of our temporary buildings at a recently completed project.

Warehouse and storage operations: Health and safety hazards and how you can avoid them

Helping you to store stock and manage your warehouse operations safely

Warehousing and storage activities present various hazards and risks if not managed correctly. We have installed a wide range of temporary warehouse buildings and have seen first hand how safe and efficient warehouse and storage operations can play a vital role in ensuring health and safety compliance and operational excellence.

So, if your currently overstocked, bursting at the seams and are struggling to store safely, here is a quick guide to improving your warehouse and storage operations. We will delve into the various hazards at play and provide expert insight to mitigate and avoid them.

Warehouse and storage industry background

The warehouse and storage industry plays a pivotal role in the global supply chain, ensuring the smooth flow of goods from manufacturers to end consumers. From worker safety to inventory management, efficient, well managed warehouse and storage facilities are key to your operational efficiency.

Warehouse housekeeping

Effective warehouse and storage operations start with strong housekeeping practices.
Warehouses are busy environments with constant movement. Proper housekeeping is fundamental to safe warehouse operations. Maintain a clean and organized workspace. Keep aisles and other areas clear of debris and clutter as this can be a common cause of slips, trips and falls. Cover and secure cables and other tripping hazards. If you are overstocked, finding the space to keep walkways clear can be a challenge. If you simply don’t have capacity to segregate walkways from storage zones and maintain emergency exit access, it may be time to increase your storage capacity with additional on-site storage.

Effective stacking and material storage

Incorrectly loaded or damaged pallet racks can lead to collapses, endangering both personnel and inventory. If floor space is at a premium, the most common option is to store higher, stacking stock up to the eaves of a building. However, this isn’t always the safest solution. It is vital to inform and educate warehouse staff on the load capacity of each rack and implement strict adherence to weight and height limits for storage.

To mitigate this risk, conduct routine inspections of pallet racks. This will identify any signs of damage or wear. You should replace or repair components as needed. To mitigate the risk, if you can no longer meet the demand for space, a temporary building can be easily integrated into an existing building. With clear eaves, large and safe racking solutions can be made to measure for your new storage building.

Hazardous materials and handling

Warehouses may need to handle or store hazardous materials, posing risks to both employees and the environment. products will have storage guidelines which need to be followed. If you are unable to store incompatible materials separately, one option would be to create a sperate storage space for these materials. A smaller storage building can be a complete stand-alone structure, or integrated to an existing store, without foundations. This provides a highly cost-effective and quick solution compared to a traditional building.

Material handling equipment (MHE) is essential for the efficient movement of goods within a warehouse. These include, roller cages and forklift trucks. Within a temporary building, you can custom design your space, by specifying roller shutter doors and other bespoke elements to make managing your warehouse safe and simple. We can work with you to design your new warehouse to accommodate all plant and equipment from the start.

Loading and unloading operations

Don’t let your loading bay become a dangerous bottleneck. If your existing warehouse operation requires unloading and loading operations, these are high risk activities. Wet and slippery conditions around vehicles and heavy loads present health and safety issues. Installing a loading canopy is one way to set your loading area up for safety. Where forklifts or pallet trucks are in operation, it’s especially important to keep the area dry and visibility clear. If you want to increase throughput, without risking rushing create an additional covered loading and unloading area.

A safe and comfortable working warehouse

There are a number of ancillary items that can improve the efficiency of your warehouse operations. These include; lighting, flooring heating and cooling. A temporary warehouse can be completely fitted out to meet your exact needs. A freezing warehouse is no safe place to work and retrofitting insulation can be cost-prohibitive. To provide a comfortable working environment and maintain a safe working temperature, we can provide a fully insulated warehouse solution.

What makes temporary building installation so quick?

Find out how much a temporary warehouse like this costs

One of the main reasons for the shortened installation timeframe that comes with temporary structures is their modular design. Our temporary structures are delivered to your site in modular sections. Each section is designed to fit together seamlessly, reducing the need for time-consuming, noisy and disruptive construction work. This allows for quick assembly and ensures that the building meets the specific requirements of each project.

Specialising in temporary building installation we have skilled and experienced teams who are well-versed in the assembly process. Their expertise ensures that the modular building goes up swiftly and accurately, in order to minimise any potential delays. Our team are here to help you with your next project. We offer national coverage with exceptional customer service!  In need of more warehouse space? A bespoke industrial building, or a loading canopy, our team are here to help.

What is the typical timeframe for a temporary building installation?

A standard warehouse structure can be installed in as little as 4 days without disruption or downtime.  It will give you a fully functional storage solution for your business. Take a look at the installation journey on a recent 15x12m temporary warehouse project…

Here is an example of what a typical timeframe for the installation temporary storage building could look like:

Day 1: Frame Installation

Day 1 installing the frame on a temporary building

Our team begin the installation of your temporary structure by assembling a lightweight bespoke sized frame on-site to maximise the available space. At this point the constructed frame is then anchored into a hard standing. This ensures durability and reliability even during harsh conditions.

All Field & Lawn temporary buildings are constructed using durable and versatile materials. These materials are specifically chosen to be lightweight yet robust, allowing for quick and easy assembly without compromising on strength and stability. With this in mind, our structures are designed to meet the relevant BS6399 and Eurocodes for wind and snow loadings.

Additionally, unlike permanent structures, Field & Lawn temporary structures require minimal foundation work. This means you can begin to install your structure straight away without spending time carrying out expensive foundation work. This significantly reduces the time needed for installation.

Day 2: Cladding

Adding cladding on a temporary building

Our buildings come with the option to incorporate robust steel cladding. This provides a durable and long-lasting finish. The next step in the installation process is to install the cladding to the outside of the frame. One of the benefits of choosing a modular temporary building for your on-site storage is the ability to customise and create a completely bespoke solution.

We have a wide range of cladding options in order to provide the perfect temporary solution for your business. Other options include insulated sandwich panels should you need a fully insulated or temperature-controlled unit. Our new temporary building configurator gives you the chance to design and specify your new temporary structure and choose the type of cladding that fits your needs perfectly.

Day 3: Roofing, lining & doors

Adding the roof on a temporary building

On day three your temporary building will be coming together nicely. Our team will then begin to add a roof to your structure. If you’re looking for a good level of natural light inside your building, we can install an industrial PVC roof and even give you the option to incorporate anti-condensation lining. The number of doors that we install within your new building will vary depending on what you plan to use it for. Will you need access for loading vehicles or a forklift? A bespoke roller shutter door will provide easy access. If you need pedestrian access to your building, we can also install pedestrian doors so your workforce can safely enter and exit the structure on foot.

Day 4: Guttering, flashing & finishing touches

day 4 of temporary building installation

On the last few days of the construction project, the focus shifts towards the essential finishing touches in order to also ensure the building’s long-term durability and functionality. Guttering systems are installed along the roofline to channel rainwater away from the building’s foundation. This prevents potential water damage and erosion, ensuring the building’s longevity.

Lastly, flashing made of weather-resistant materials like metal is installed at ground level, intersections and wall connections. As a result water is prevented from entering the structure.

Thanks to our off-site manufacturing approach, there’s minimal waste to manage, promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility. The streamlined assembly and precision engineering of components for prefabricated buildings means that these final stages of guttering, flashing, and other finishing touches can be completed within just a few days, so it’s a quick tidy-up and off to the next project!

Quality and durability

Despite the “temporary” name and the rapid installation, it’s important to realise these structures are built to last. Additionally, they are also backed by a comprehensive warranty.  Furthermore, our structures can be in place for over 20 years.  They are made with high quality materials and engineered to exacting standards to suit the location.  Of course, this includes conforming to all UK Building regulations.

With this in mind, Field & Lawn ensure that installing a temporary building is a quick and efficient process that can provide your business with much-needed extra space in as little as 5 days. The speed of installation, combined with the cost-effective and versatile nature of temporary buildings, make them an excellent choice for companies facing a shortage of space. Prefabricated warehouses. They’re Not what they used to be!

Instantly increase your on-site storage capacity

If you are close to capacity and need extra storage space quickly, prefabricated warehouses provide additional on-site storage space in days. Traditionally constructing warehouses and storage buildings comes with a significant price tag and a long, disruptive build programme. With this in mind, choosing a prefabricated warehouse means the stress and inconvenience as well as the cost of constructing a traditional warehouse building is easily avoided.

Our prefabricated structures are specified with a range of high quality finishes from insulated panels to robust industrial steel cladding. Despite this, when people think of prefabs, it often evokes thoughts of old, poor quality, post-war buildings. In contrast to this, precision engineering has advanced to new heights and prefabricated temporary buildings are highly durable, long lasting structures that deliver a long-term solution for a variety of sectors and uses.

Installing a prefabricated warehouse building is fast, economical, and flexible. This article will cover the benefits of prefabricated structures, and look at prefabricated warehouses, storage units as well as industrial steel buildings.

Quality and durability

Prefabricated warehouse installed by Field and Lawn

Our prefabricated warehouses, storage units and industrial buildings are manufactured using the very latest precision engineering technology. Consequently, this minimises waste and means that quality can be closely controlled every step of the way. From initial design, through to installation. Giving you a pre-engineered building solution that is robust, fast to install and easily maintained. Steel sided industrial structures generally take 4-6 weeks to manufacture. In addition, prefabricated components are transported directly to your site and installed by our in-house, experienced team.

Rapid deployment

One of the biggest advantages of prefabricated warehouses is their rapid deployment and installation capability. Generally we can install a warehouse or industrial shed in a matter of days.  Furthermore, the modular design of the panels and lightweight frames ensures swift installation, for this reason the construction time is significantly reduced when compared to traditional building methods.

Cost effectiveness

In today’s competitive business landscape, cost-efficiency is key. Prefabricated warehouses and industrial buildings are cost effective. They are in the region of 70% cheaper to build by comparison to a traditional warehouse. You can also specify your structure to your exact requirements, looking at options such as access doors, insulation levels, cladding, and roof types. With a low initial cost and along-life span, they provide a compelling option when it comes to both warehousing and industrial steel storage buildings. Moreover, the simplicity of foundation requirements further adds cost savings, making these structures a highly economical choice for growing businesses who need more space quickly.

Flexibility: Relocate or extend with ease

Prefabricated warehouse buildings are re-locatable, this means you can rent a warehouse, storage building or industrial steel shed for a term to suit your business. It can simply be returned after the rental period, extended, purchased outright or re-located to a different site.  This provides a unique level of flexibility for growing business to flex and change, without significant upfront expenditure. Due to their quality, you can relocate our structures multiple times without the need for major part replacements, providing unmatched flexibility.

Steel warehouse structures and industrial units

If your business needs ultra durability, steel warehouses and industrial units can provide just that.  Prefabricated steel warehouses can be supplied in a range of sizes and specified to your needs.  From bespoke racking to large access doors for machinery and vehicles. We can even provide a range of colours! Steel warehouses can also be connected to existing buildings with ease or used as standalone industrial storage structures.
